I guess this Question is Directed to Jennifer Hambach;
Last Month you mentioned that Parking permits were not yet out,
What is the policy on temporal parking permits.
One of our current grad students is graduating and needs to sublet her apartment beginning in Autumn. The apartment is one bedroom in a 3-bedroom townhouse at Olentangy Commons. The rent is $250/person/month excluding utilities (about $100/
person for water+gas+electric+internet+trash). If anyone is interested they can contact Lalintip Hocharoen at lhocharo@chemistry.ohio-state. edu.
Hey guys! Get together number two is on its way... Get excited!!

Did you know you can practice for the Gen Chem proficiency exam that is given during the TA training portion of orientation? You can! Two practice exams are posted here: http://chemistry.osu.edu/
graduate/orientationOnce you take the exams, send me an e-mail and I'll send you the answers.
Things tend to get pretty quiet in June and July, so I thought I'd check in to see if there are any questions that have gone unanswered or concerns that haven't been addressed. International students - questions about OIA check-in or the SPEAK test? Questions about classes, proficiency exams, TA training, parking permits, health insurance? Chances are if you've got a question, someone else has the same one, but if you'd rather ask your question in private, just e-mail me! hambach.2@osu.edu

A current female chem grad student is searching for a female roommate. This student, Alyssa, currently lives 10 or so miles from campus and would like to find a roommate and move closer to campus. She is considering looking for an apartment that is on the bus route and in the Henderson Rd./Bethel Rd. area. If you are female, still need to find an apartment, and would like a roommate, please contact Alyssa at robson.53@buckeyemail.osu.edu.

Hey guys!
If you are doing summer projects and are feeling lonely and would like to make some friends, here is the event for the get together we will have. If you are opposed to the date and time just let us know in the event and we will figure out a date and time that suits everyone. And if you are not here yet to experience this - don't fret! I am sure we will have another one of these sometime later in the summer!

If any of you have received an e-mail asking you to sign a Financial Responsibility Statement, please do so by the end of the day on Friday, June 8th. I previously told several students that it wasn't necessary to sign the statement prior to Autumn semester, but I now know that it must be done by tomorrow or you may be blocked from registering for Autumn semester courses. For more information, please go to ssc.osu.edu/pdf/
Financial_Responsibility_FAQs.p df and I apologize for any confusion!
If you haven't already, please begin using your Buckeyemail accounts. As of today, all e-mail re: OSU will be sent to that address.https://email.osu.edu/
Summer Students - if you haven't received your e-mail from HR/Arts & Sciences Business Service Center, please check your Buckeyemail account as that is where you will receive the e-mail.
Here's a housing opportunity open to international students:
Good morning.
If you have international students seeking housing, especially those arriving in the U.S. for the first time, please see the attached sheet about my house. I am an older OSU graduate student (History Department) who has lived, worked, and taught abroad for over fifteen years and am therefore very familiar with how daunting relocating to a different country can be. As a result, when in the U.S., I offer my furnished home to OSU graduate and mature undergraduate international students. I've been renting to international grads on and off over the last ten years so can guarantee a pleasant experience settling in to campus and Columbus. I know both well since OSU is where I earned my BS, MA, and am currently working o...See More
Here's some new info I was just sent and asked to pass along to those of you who are still looking for a roommate:
"My name is Brooke Stevens and I am looking for a roommate for the 2012-2013 school year. The room is in a 2 bedroom condo at 1801 Northwest Blvd located less than miles from Evans Lab or an 8 minute bus ride. The condo is fully renovated! It has a finished basement including washer and dryer. The kitchen has all new appliances and cabinets. The bathrooms are completely redone and there is also access to a patio. You will have access to your own full bathroom and own reserved parking spot. Male or females are welcome to respond. Rent is open for negotiations and would include utilities. If interested please e-mail stevenbn@dukes.jmu.edu or call 571-277-6404. (21+ only please)"
SPEAK Test information for students whose native language is NOT English:
Because of the shortened summer session due to the semester transition, there is very little time in early August for the Spoken English Program to administer SPEAK tests. If you will be in Columbus this summer, please register to take your SPEAK test as soon as possible. If you won’t be in Columbus this summer, then registering to take your SPEAK test should be the 2nd thing you do after you arrive (the first thing is to check in with the Office of International Affairs).
To make an appointment to take a SPEAK test, please call 614-292-5005, or stop by the Spoken English office at 196 Arps Hall. The cost of the SPEAK test is $90, but the Department of Chemistry will be paying that fee for each of you.
A sample SPEAK test is available here: http://esl.ehe.osu.edu/wp-content/uploads/2011/01/ Practice_SPEAK.pdf

A note about Chemistry orientation:
Chemistry Department orientation/TA training starts on August 13th and continues through August 21st. All students are expected to be present on all orientation days with exception to the weekend (August 18th and 19th). A schedule of events is forthcoming, but I've uploaded last year's schedule so that all of you can get an idea of what to expect. Don't worry for now what the individual events are about; that information will become clearer as you move through the orientation process.
I had a question today that I thought would be good to address with all of you. The question was regarding the proficiency exams given on the first day of Chemistry's orientation. At this point, each of you have selected a division to join when you enroll. On the first day of orientation, you will take an ACS standardized exam for the division you will join and you will not be administered any of the 4 other ACS standardized exams (we used to give each student all 5 exams, but we stopped doing that several years ago). This standardized exam, which we refer to as a proficiency exam, is meant to aid students/advisors in selecting courses during Autumn Semester advising, which will take place on the 3rd or 4th day of orientation. The important thing to remember is that the result (proficient, marginally proficient, or not proficient) are used FOR ADVISING PURPOSES ONLY! A study guide is available athttps://chemistry.osu.edu/

That's trial map I made which labels information provided by seniors we may use in the beginning of OSU life, you can also modify this map and add any information such as housing (I only labeled UV and OV now) on this map, by the way, OSU also provides app included lots useful eventshttp://maps.google.com/maps/

Relocating anywhere is a big expense of both time and money and I've been asked many times over the last few weeks about how much money will be needed to relocate. My best (and probably conservative) estimate is to be prepared to spend $1500 to $2000 to get an apartment leased and ready for occupation and perhaps another $500-$1500 to actually get to Columbus from your current location depending on how far away that is and whether you will fly with just a few bags or rent a moving truck and bring all of your belongings with you.
Common relocation expenses include, but are not limited to, paying a security deposit and first month's rent for an apartment, the cost of setting up utilities (possibilities are phone, internet, cable TV, gas, electric, and water) if they're not included in the rent, purchasing a cell phone if a new one is needed, purchasing items to furnish your home (couch, bed, chair, desk, table, pots, pans, dishes, et al), and buying groceries to stock your kitchen.
Let's open this up for discussion. Does anyone have advice about budgeting for relocation? Are you finding hidden expenses that you can let others know about in advance? Do you have any tips for relocating without spending a lot of money?
International students - OIA is now posting pre-arrival information on its web site:
http://oia.osu.edu/international-students/ pre-arrival-information.html. I encourage each of you to read these posts thoroughly, but please note that the check-in dates listed in the first post are for international students enrolling at OSU for summer semester, so those dates can be disregarded until they get updated for Autumn. Also, none of you will be able to attend the OIA orientation on August 17th because it conflicts with Dept. of Chemistry TA orientation. I have already been told that the OIA orientation isn't mandatory, but as you check-in at OIA when you arrive later this summer, please let me know if you are instructed otherwise.
Hey everyone! So I'm in kind of a pickle and any one of you can help me out! I signed a lease and put a deposit on an apartment that I am not going to be living in now and the only way I can get some of my money back is for someone to rent it out and transfer the lease. The place is a one bedroom on 1816 Summit, very close to campus. It is about a 15 minute walk and there is a bus stop at the corner. The place is VERY nice and large, I went to see it during the visiting weekend. New kitchen appliances, laundry facilities in the basement and even has parking in the back. The place is also pet friendly. The rent is $595/month plus a $15 fee that includes your water and gas I believe. The deposit would be equal to one month's rent. Here is the website for the place, http://
www.ohiostaterentals.com/ properties/ 1814-1818_Summit(1of3).htm
So if anyone is interested, PLEASE let me know! I would appreciate it SO much!
I just had an e-mail from a student asking for some information about the cost of parking at OSU. I thought the information might help everyone:
Parking permit prices range anywhere from ~$90 to ~$675 depending on which permit you purchase. As grad students on appointments (GAA/GTA/GRA/Fellowship), those of you who need to bring your cars to campus are obligateed to purchase a “B” level permit. These permit types include “B”, “WB”” (west campus lots), “BG” (Arps garage), and “BE” (evenings only). The west campus pass is cheapest, the “B” surface lot pass is priced in the mid-range and the BG pass is the most expensive.
The 2012-2013 permit prices are not yet posted, but here’s a link to the 2011-2012 prices http://tp.osu.edu/facstaff/parking/permitprices.shtml. My guess is that pr...See More

I'll send this info out by e-mail, too, but I want to let everyone know that I just learned that any student NOT participating in summer research (so some students here in the US and ALL students who are not currently in the US) must complete their hiring paperwork IN PERSON (meaning here at OSU in Columbus) before or on August 1st in order to have their employment verified by August 3rd and a paycheck distributed in August. This is new information given to me and I apologize to the few of you who had previously asked what day to arrive for Autumn and for whom I had specified a later date. The first day of Dept of Chemistry orientation is scheduled for August 13, 2012.

Hey everyone, congratulations to everyone that got accepted. I'm looking forward to meeting lots of new grad students once the semester gets underway. I am currently looking for a roommate for the fall semester, and possibly part of the summer too depending on the summer research opportunity. I have been looking up online many different apartment complexes in the area and will be visiting them soon. Looking to split an 2 bedroom apartment in the upper arlington/olentangy area with a fellow grad student. If anyone has any interest at splitting a place, has any helpful info on apartments in that area, or if you are looking for a roommate please send me a message. Feel free to friend me as well if you would like. Thank you.

One of our current grad students is looking for a roommate:
"I am looking for a female roommate to sublease an off-campus 2 bedroom apartment starting anytime. Rent is ~$450 a month, and this includes rent, internet, water, and electricity. The apartment is about a one minute walk from the COTA busline #18 that goes directly to campus (and stops right in front of the chemistry building--COTA is free for OSU students). There is off-street parking, dishwasher, and washer/dryer. There is a swimming pool in the apartment complex. Cats are OK as long as it can get along with another cat. The roommate the subleaser will be residing with is female, has a cat, and is a biochemistry graduate student at Ohio State.
The sublease will go until November with the option to sign a rental contract then if desired.
If interested, please contact Suzanne Lanier at lanier.43@osu.edu"
Hi everyone! If anyone is looking for a place, we have an extra room in a condo that I am about to put a deposit down on. Me and one of my friends from undergrad are rooming together, and my boyfriend will be potentially living with us as well. There are 3 large bedroom and 2 full bathrooms. Rent is $1200/month. We will have a couple of dogs with us- my 70 lb german shephed mix and my friend's chihuahua. Both are very well behaved! If you are interested (male or female), please let me know and I will get you more details! The landlord is flexible on the move in date, so for those doing summer research (like me!) there is the potential for moving in before August.

I'm starting to get a lot of questions about good places to live. I typically advise students to look within ~5 miles of campus, avoid the area directly to the east, and to search in the areas of Clintonville, Upper Arlington, the Short North/Victorian Village, German Village, and Grandview. For those of you who have already signed leases or are reasonably familiar with Columbus, please share your thoughts!

hi everyone~~ I found a great website wile i search for place to live. visithttp://offcampus.osu.edu/
